Ravi Vasudevan (Delhi)
Ray’s Road Movie
Ramshackle cars speeding on broken country roads, the low-life of taxi drivers in cheap bars, sex traffic and opium networks, sensual attractions and fist-fights, Satyajit Ray and lead actor Soumitra Chatterjee invite us into a world of bodies, impulses, objects and spaces in an often startling departure from the Ray oeuvre.
Ravi Vasudevan is a film historian who co-directs Sarai, the media research programme of the Centre for the Study of Developing Societies, and is co-founder of Bioscope: South Asian Screen Studies.
Screening: ABHIJAN (The Expedition), India 1962, 145 min.
