Calcutta’s Maw: Thinking the Indian New Wave in Satyajit Ray’s PRATIDWANDI

Satyajit Ray’s Pratidwandi (The Adversary, 1970) is a searing portrait of Ray’s beloved Calcutta in political and social turmoil; it is equally Ray’s engagement with the New Indian Cinema and the propositions of the Third Cinema. As part of the Calcutta trilogy, it is a rich exploration of political subjectivity, masculinity, and social decline alongside Ray’s aesthetic experiments with international New Wave styles and techniques.

Bishnupriya Ghosh teaches in global media at the University of California, Santa Barbara.
