Beyond the Novelistic: KANCHENJUNGHA at the Crossroads

“This is a film that could not have been a novel…”

This is how Satyajit Ray addressed Kanchenjungha, his 1962 film that received lukewarm response from its audience in India and abroad. Considering the colonial legacy and complex modernity of the Indian novel, we can trace the curiously problematic response to the film to its rejection of the novelistic and propose a different aesthetic regime for Kanchenjungha that aligns it more with transnational modernist cinema of the 1960s.

Parichay Patra is an Assistant Professor at the School of Liberal Arts, Indian Institute of Technology Jodhpur, India.

Screening: KANCHENJUNGHA, India 1962, 97 min.
