In Satyajit Ray’s CHARULATA (1964) Charu (Madhabi Mukherjee) imagines the modern through the dynamics of her vision such that the curious outward glance becomes the revealing inward gaze combining her solitude, self-consciousness, and sensitivity to initiate a transformative journey of self-reflection and inquiry.

Priyadarshini Shanker is an Assistant Professor of Film Studies at the University of North Carolina Wilmington.
