Ray Beyond Realisms: The Irrational and the non-human in MONIHARA and DEVI

Satyajit Ray’s towering presence in Indian cinema studies can hardly be overstated. Ray’s oeuvre is mostly discussed within frameworks of realism and humanism. MONIHARA and DEVI allow us to focus on the impulses that are seldom invoked in discussions of Ray, including the gothic and the non-human.

Meheli Sen is Associate Professor in the department of African, Middle Eastern, and South Asian Languages and Literatures, and the Cinema Studies program at Rutgers University.

Film: MONIHARA (THE LOST JEWELS), as part of THREE DAUGHTERS India 1961, 158 min.
