The Untimely Filmmaker: Satyajit Ray’s City and a Crisis of Historicism

Although many contemporaries derided him as apolitical, Satyajit Ray’s films open up radically new ways of theorizing postcolonial presents and futures. This lecture analyzes the ways in which the discipline of history, especially historians’ commitment to thinking about temporality, is enriched and anticipated in the work of this renowned filmmaker.

Rochona Majumdar is Professor in the department of South Asian Languages and Civilizations and Cinema and Media Studies at the University of Chicago.

Screening: JANA ARANYA (The Middleman), India 1975, 131 min.
