A Double-Take on Class Relations: Satyajit Ray’s SEEMABADDHA (COMPANY LIMITED, 1971)
The films of Satyajit Ray’s “Calcutta Trilogy”, made between 1970 and 1976, all depict the contemporary reality of the educated, urban bourgeoisie in his home city. Bracketed by PRATIDWANDI (THE ADVERSARY, 1970) and JANA ARANYA (THE MIDDLEMAN, 1976), SEEMABADDHA (COMPANY LIMITED) offers an acerbic critique of Bengali society, as the economic rise of the new middle-class was accompanied, in his view, by corruption, exploitative practices and a pervasive moral turpitude.
